What are Dental Crowns?
A crown is a tooth-shaped covering that is placed over a healthy tooth after the damaged portion has been removed. Crowns are often the final step in a root canal treatment. If you have lost teeth, dental crowns can also be used to restore a dental implant, or anchor a dental bridge. This treatment can be combined with cosmetic dentistry treatments like teeth whitening and veneers to achieve a more dramatic overall aesthetic enhancement in your smile.
Placing Dental Crowns
Before the dental crown is placed, the decayed and damaged portions of the tooth are removed. Next, we take a digital impression with our state-of-the-art Cadent iTero™. Dr. Buono was the first cosmetic dentist in the world to use this technology, which is now being used by many dental practices for the convenience it offers patients. With this advanced technology, the most accurate impressions of your smile can be taken, allowing us to provide extremely life-like prosthetic teeth.
Your impression will then be sent to our boutique lab. This lab is highly regarded for making prosthetic teeth of unsurpassed quality. While tooth-colored porcelain crowns are appropriate for many restorations, some cases may require a metal crown. We only use high precious metal crowns to ensure the best possible satisfaction for our patients.
Most patients can expect to have their crowns in a week. While you wait, we can provide a temporary crown to maintain your comfort and the function of your smile. During your second appointment, Dr. Buono will try in your crown to ensure a proper fit. He will then permanently bond the crown into place using a special dental cement. If necessary, he will make slight alterations to achieve a comfortable bite.
Dental Crown Care
Most crowns have a lifespan of about seven years. This can be extended though with good dental hygiene and some common sense. First, it is important to avoid chewing brittle or sticky foods that might dislodge your restoration. Second, it is best to floss regularly around your crown, but with a slightly altered technique. Rather than pulling the floss up and down, the floss should be pulled front to back to prevent dislodging the crown.
