Treatment for Cavities: Tooth-Colored Filling Benefits By Louis Buono on January 06, 2017

Tooth-colored FillingsIf you have a cavity, you will most likely need a filling to repair the tooth after the tooth decay has been removed. In the past, this meant large amalgam, or metal, fillings, which were visible on the surfaces of the teeth. Not only did these metal fillings mar the appearance of patients’ smiles, but they also had negative long-term consequences for their oral health as well.

Fortunately, with the advancements of dental technology came a more aesthetically pleasing alternative: composite resin. The tooth-colored filling benefits far outweigh those of metal fillings. At our Long Island, NY, office, Dr. Louis Buono places these fillings as part of our restorative dentistry services to restore your oral health and give you a beautiful smile.

The Problem with Metal Fillings

There are actually several problems with metal fillings. First, they are large, so they not only require the removal of the cavity but some of the natural, healthy tooth structure as well. At Garden City Smiles, we prefer a more conservative approach that allows us to preserve as much of the healthy tooth as possible.

Second, metal fillings react to temperature changes. They expand and contract quickly in response to hot and cold. Over time, this can damage the tooth, leading to cracks or fractures that will require additional treatment. In addition, this can also lead to extreme tooth sensitivity.

On top of all that, amalgam fillings contain mercury. While it is disputed as to whether metal fillings contain mercury in large enough amounts to cause problems for patients, we prefer to avoid any potential toxicity altogether.

Non-Toxic

Unlike metal filings, composite resin is non-toxic and biocompatible. They contain no toxic substances that could be harmful to patients now or in the future. Patients can feel confident that our tooth-colored fillings are the safest option currently available.

Non-Damaging

Whereas metal fillings react to changes in temperature, tooth-colored fillings do not. This means the filling will truly repair and strengthen the tooth without causing further damage. They also fit nicely in the space left after a cavity is removed. We do not have to remove additional healthy tooth structures to accommodate composite resin. This leaves more of your natural tooth intact, which is better for your oral health.

Aesthetics

Many patients feel that metal fillings are noticeable. They can lead to lowered self-esteem and self-confidence, especially for patients who have had multiple fillings. Tooth-colored fillings are not just white. We actually blend the composite resin so that it closely matches the natural shade of the surrounding tooth. This makes the filling virtually invisible to the naked eye. With tooth-colored fillings, patients can smile with confidence, knowing that no one else will detect any fillings.
