The Dental Implants Advantage
Dental implants provide a wealth of long-term advantages. While traditional dentures are prone to slipping whenever a person eats or speaks, implant-supported dentures remain securely in place. Patients report being able to speak, bite, chew, and smile with greater ease and confidence once they have been fitted with implant-supported dentures. Another tremendous benefit of dental implants is that they actually prevent the loss of bone mass in the jaw that occurs naturally following tooth loss. When a missing tooth is left untreated for a long period of time, the body will begin to resorb the bone cells in that area. However, the body perceives dental implants as tooth roots, which halts this process. Meanwhile, dental implants have a substantial lifespan. With proper care, you can expect your dental implants to last more than 40 years.
If you are a non-smoker with adequate bone mass in your jaw, and you need to replace missing teeth, you may be a good candidate for dental implants. If you have lost substantial bone mass, a bone graft can be performed so that there will be sufficient support for an implant. The surest way to determine whether implants are right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Buono.
Placing Dental Implants
The placement of dental implants requires two procedures. During the first procedure, a very small incision is made in the gums to expose the jaw bone. A small pilot hole is drilled into the bone, and the threaded implant is inserted. During the next three to six months, osseointegration (the fusion of the bone to the implant) takes place. Once the implant and jaw bone have fully integrated, an incision is once again placed in the gums, exposing the implant. A special abutment is attached by our restorative dentist, Dr. Buono, which will eventually connect your restoration to the implant. The abutment remains above the gum line. Once the gums have healed, Dr. Buono can begin preparing your crown, bridge, or dentures.
